Salaries vary from state to state and even from one facility to the other within each state. Private facilities usually pay slightly more than public hospitals, although the latter may have a requirement for out of hours and on-call work, which can boost your salary significantly with penalty payments. Many public facilities also offer salary packaging, which can have a positive impact on your take home earnings. Many public facilities in country areas may also be able to offer subsidised accommodation and assistance with travel costs.
It is important to be aware that it is difficult to make a direct comparison between local and overseas salaries. Salaries in the allied health disciplines commence above the national average salary. It is reasonable to maintain a high standard of living on a contract or locum salary. Salaries will vary according to destination and level of experience. One may decide to compromise on salary to spend time in a specific location.
A recent graduate will earn upwards of $19 per hour although the rate could be as high as $55 per hour dependent on experience, specialist skills , or employer or destination.
