You are required to be accredited to practise within the medical imaging professions in Australia. All categories of medical imaging professionals employed in Australia can apply to be accredited by the Australian Institute of Radiography. New Zealand qualified technologists are automatically eligible for accreditation and must complete the application form and pay the required fee (please contact us if you would like to clarify fee at time of submitting application.) Most other overseas qualified radiographers, ultrasonographers, nuclear medicine technologists and radiation therapists are required to be assessed by the AIR and the process can take several months. Some UK degree courses have been assessed by the Australian Institute of Radiography and graduates of such programmes are entitled to apply directly for accreditation. Rather than assessment, this process is much quicker and less expensive. For specific information contact GHS or:

If you would like to work in New Zealand you must be registered with NZMRTB. There are four categories, general, ultrasound, MRI and Nuclear Medicine. Dedicated mammography professionals whose credentials are acceptable to NZMRTB will be offered registration in the general category with a limited scope to practise in mammography.
Some overseas institutions are recognized by the NZMRTB and allow applicants to apply directly for registration. If you did not graduate from a university on the list accredited by the NZMRTB you will be required to go through assessment which can take approximately four months. If you hold Australian registration, you may be eligible for registration under the TTMR agreement. This is quicker and cheaper than applying for qualification recognition. Please contact GHS if you need further advice.
